DAY 1: MONDAY - March 30, 2020

“ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE” (Acting for the Stage)

Youtheatre starts the week with a fresh face! Guest instructor Shelby Lewis is new to Fort Wayne, having studied acting at Carnegie-Mellon and recently earning her Masters in Theatre Education at the University of Northern Colorado. She’ll start camp off in dramatic fashion with a challenging and fun-filled acting workshop that takes you through everything from warm-ups and acting games to scene-work and Shakespeare! Then, you’ll get the star treatment with a behind-the-scenes tour of Fort Wayne’s historic Embassy Theatre. You’ll even get your own moment in the spotlight, performing work from the morning session on the Embassy stage! (Note: While not necessary, this day is great paired with Friday’s “Stage Combat” workshop, as it incorporates some of the same scenes explored in different ways.)

DAY 2: TUESDAY- March 31, 2020

“I’VE GOT RHYTHM!” (Dance in Theatre)

It’s a day of music, movement and rhythm! With the help of the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, Youtheatre invites you to join in as we explore the history of movement and dance in theatre! Learn exciting combinations and the history behind some of Broadway's most iconic musicals. After a morning of fun you’ll head down the block to the Dance Collective studios to explore everything from modern improvisational dance to the ancient art of Taiko drumming with some of FWDC’s best instructors!

DAY 3: FRIDAY- April 1, 2020

“PUNCHES, KICKS & HAIR-PULLS, OH MY!” (Stage Combat)

Punches, kicks, hair-pulls, falls & more! Come learn the safe and exciting techniques of Stage Combat with the Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Instructor and Executive Director Todd Espeland  will teach you how to stage safe unarmed stage combat scenes using techniques from the Society of American Fight Directors. This day is action-packed. The morning will be used for fight instruction and technique, then it’s off to the silver screen as you travel to the Fort Wayne Cinema Center for a tour, complete with popcorn and a movie!. (Note: While not necessary, this day is great paired with Monday’s “Acting for the Stage” workshop, as it incorporates some of the same scenes explored in different ways.)

DAY 4: THURSDAY- April 2, 2020

“LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!” (Acting & Working in Film)

Join Youtheatre for a day of Hollywood movie-making magic! Local filmmaker and director Dan Katter is the owner of Media 40, where he creates some of your favorite local commercials. In an extended session, Dan will turn the AUC rehearsal hall into a mini-movie studio complete with camera dollies, monitors and boom mics as he guides you through working in front of and behind the camera! Afterwards, you’ll get to explore all the nooks and crannies of the Arts United Center with AUC Technical Director Luke Hollinger giving you an inside look at the lights, sound and other technical areas of the building that the Fort Wayne Ballet, Civic Theatre and Youtheatre call home.

DAY 5: WEDNESDAY- April 3, 2020

“CREATING CHARACTERS” (Masks)

Discover the many characters within you! Using full face masks, half masks, and full body masks, students will learn about pantomime, play, physical expression and how to create their own characters. Instructor and new Youtheatre Executive Director Todd Espeland is a graduate of the world renowned Dell' Arte International School of Physical Theatre. Using his extensive background in masks, clowning and more, Todd will teach the mask techniques famously used by Julie Taymor, director of The Lion King, and Italian Commedia Dell' Arte to help you create big vibrant characters and engaging monologues. Then it’s off to see other larger than life artwork  as we travel to the Fort Wayne Museum of Art for a full tour!
