“How Taiko was Born”

Fort Wayne Taiko drummers Allison Ballard, Jackie Hinsey, Sara Sherman and Beth Fenstermacher will present the traditional Japanese folk tale about How Taiko was Born. Performers will use taiko drums, various hand held percussion instruments, theatre and dance to portray how the sun goddess Amaterasu became angry at her brother Susanowo, the thunder god, and hid herself away in a cave. Audience members will help performers and the wild and wily goddess Uzume use the taiko drum to lure Amaterasu out of the cave and save the world from eternal darkness.
Taiko is a drumming and movement form based on Japanese tradition. Fort Wayne Taiko, a program of the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, is the only performing taiko group in Indiana and one of the few in the Midwest. Fort Wayne Taiko has offered Northeast Indiana with taiko classes, workshops and performances since 2000.
